What Sort Of Cars Are NASCAR Cars?

What Do Differential Gears Do?
In a car engine chemical energy stored in petrol is converted into kinetic energy by the way of combustion. This energy is used to rotate a shaft which connects to a gear box. The gears within the box change how much power from the engine is sent onto the wheels. The gear box is connected to a differentials box which then transmits the power to the wheels.
Sending the power straight to the wheels from the gear box can cause difficulties. The wheels will not rotate at the same rate as each other when turning a corner, this is because they travel differing distances in the same space of time. They can be allowed to spin at different rates using a differential box.
Cars have the differential system installed on different places depending on what wheels provide the power. If the car uses a front wheel drive system the box will be at the front, in a rear wheel drive car the box is located towards the rear. In a four wheel drive car there are two boxes both at the front and the back as well as another box connecting the two sets of wheels.
Essentially what a differential consists of is a set of perpendicular gears. The drive shaft enters the box and is connected to two gears which are attached to the wheel shafts, these gears are at a right angle to the drive shaft gear. Smaller gears known as pinions are attached to each wheel gear, when a wheel is spinning faster than the other its theses small gears which allow it to do so.
The basic form of differential allows applies the same torque (rotational force) to each wheel however. The speed of the wheel will be limited by how much traction is available to the wheels. This means if one wheel has less grip than its counterpart it will slip, which can damage components of the car. A limited slip differential can remedy this.
The limited slip uses a mechanism which detects if one wheel is slipping while the other is not. It can direct the torque to the wheel with grip allowing the car to keep moving. It does this by using a clutch mechanism, a spring forces the gears against a clutch plate when a wheel starts to slip. A lot of torque is needed to overcome the clutch so the majority of torque is directed towards the other wheel.
Differentials basically allow for a set of wheels to rotate at different speeds to one another. This is useful for when a car is turning a corner or for when a wheel has more grip than the other. Damage to components in the car could occur without this system in place.
